Hey, AI novelist,

Plotting a novel is an adventure—sometimes thrilling, sometimes overwhelming.

But what if you had a writing assistant to help you structure your ideas, refine your pacing, and keep your story moving forward? That’s where AI comes in.

AI is an incredible brainstorming tool, but like any tool, it works best when used with intention.

Today, we’re diving into how you can plot your novel step by step using AI.

Pull up a chair, grab your favorite writing notebook (or open your AI assistant), and let’s get to work.

HERE. 🙌🏾

Step 1: Establish Your Story Structure

Your novel needs a clear structure before AI can effectively assist in plotting. Think of this step as building the skeleton of your story—the framework that holds everything together.

Popular story structures include:

  • Three-Act Structure – Traditional framework: Setup, Confrontation, and Resolution.

  • Four-Act Structure – Similar to three acts but with a defined midpoint shift.

  • Save the Cat Beat Sheet – A detailed framework focusing on pacing.

  • Romancing the Beat – Designed specifically for romance novels.

Before moving forward, decide which structure fits your novel best. This ensures AI-generated content aligns with your vision.

Step 2: Setting Up AI for Effective Plotting

AI is only as good as the input you provide. If you want high-quality results, you must prime it with key story details.

What to provide AI:

  • Your genre and subgenre (romance, mystery, fantasy, etc.).

  • The themes and tone (lighthearted, intense, suspenseful).

  • Your protagonist’s internal conflict and what’s keeping them from their goal.

  • Your story’s tropes and must-have moments.

  • The setting and any world-building details needed for context.

PRO TIP: Instead of uploading large documents, manually input your details into AI. This helps maintain accuracy and keeps AI focused on the most important elements of your story.

Step 3: Build the Foundation with Act 1

The first act introduces your characters, their struggles, and the world they live in. This is where your readers get hooked.

Your Act 1 should include:

  • The protagonist’s current reality and what’s holding them back.

  • The inciting incident—the event that sets the story in motion.

  • An introduction to the love interest or main external conflict.

  • Early obstacles that create tension and emotional stakes.

Use AI to brainstorm:

  • Meet-cute scenarios for romance.

  • First encounters with the antagonist for thrillers.

  • The first moment that hints at deeper conflict.

Step 4: Creating a Chapter-by-Chapter Outline

Once Act 1 is solid, it’s time to outline each chapter.

Each chapter should include:

  • A strong hook to grab attention.

  • A clear conflict that moves the plot forward.

  • Emotional beats that develop the character arc.

  • A compelling ending that keeps readers engaged.

How AI helps:

  • Suggests different ways a scene could unfold.

  • Fills in details based on your provided story beats.

  • Helps maintain pacing and logical flow.

PRO TIP: AI can generate a full outline, but always tweak and adjust to match your vision and tone.

Step 5: Align the Timeline & Pacing

A novel’s timeline impacts everything—character development, subplots, and pacing.

Things to consider:

  • Does your novel unfold over weeks, months, or years?

  • Are major events (like a festival or competition) spaced logically?

  • Do emotional developments feel realistic and natural?

Use AI to:

  • Map out seasonal beats or key story events.

  • Identify pacing issues—if a plot twist happens too early or too late.

  • Ensure character arcs align with external events.

Step 6: Refining Act 2 & Beyond

Act 2 is where your story deepens—whether through romantic tension, increased stakes, or a major turning point.

Key Act 2 elements:

  • The midpoint shift (a major reveal, character realization, or new obstacle).

  • The romantic arc deepens (if applicable).

  • The protagonist’s internal and external conflicts collide.

  • Subplots and secondary characters enhance the main storyline.

AI can help by:

  • Generating dialogue for high-stakes confrontations.

  • Suggesting ways to escalate tension without rushing.

  • Helping balance external action with internal emotional shifts.

Step 7: Finalizing Your Outline & Preparing for Drafting

Before jumping into drafting, run a final check on your outline.

Ask yourself:

  • Does each act end with a strong turning point?

  • Do emotional beats align with the character’s arc?

  • Is the pacing balanced?

At this point, AI has helped you structure your novel.
